Small Monsters Games is almost finished with Undersea Explorers: Coral Reef Adventure. It’s been in progress for a while, but I was originally calling it Thalassa or maybe That Ocean Thing. In our new card game, players are marine biologists on a deep-sea research project. The goal is to collect data on creatures of a coral reef by finding matches before anyone else does. These matches are mostly pairs of the same sea creature, but there are also special symbiotic pairs who need to be paired with their friend, and a sneaky octopus that requires 3 cards to make a match.

We used photographs of real sea creatures for this one, and we consulted with marine biologists to choose realistic coral reef animals and add interesting trivia about undersea life. Great improvement over my original Sharkie1 and Fishie2, right?

This game was inspired by my little ESL students. Many of them felt shy speaking English and using Zoom to talk with a new teacher, but really enjoyed telling me about sea life and shark facts. Many kids in my life love talking about and learning about strange and special sea creatures. We hope this game will be fun for the emerging marine biologists in your family, too.

Undersea Explorers: Coral Reef Adventure is for 2-4 players. We’re saying it’s for players 8 and up, but it’s really determined by reading level. Younger friends who are great readers can play easily, and developing readers may want to play on a team with someone else.
